The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF) in Japan has been playing host to ‘Makeup Artist’, a new film by the director of the acclaimed Iranian documentary ‘Asho’.
Made by Jafar Najafi, ‘Makeup Artist’ is competing with seventeen other documentary films at the New Asian Currents category of the Japanese festival.
It tells the story of Mina, a makeup artist who is determined to make her dreams come true.
Not only she refuses to succumb to her husband and mother-in-law’s fierce opposition, but also paves her own path and pushes forward along it.
Gradually, it looks as if the people and world around her are starting to change.
Najafi has been celebrated for his short documentary ‘Asho’ which is about a young shepherd boy who is obsessed with Hollywood movies and wants to become an actor.
‘Asho’ has so far won many awards, including a special mention at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film - DOK Leipzig in Germany, Lessina Silver for Best Short Film at the Film Festival Della Lessinia in Italy, International Short Film Jury award at the DOQUMENTA International Documentary Film Festival in Mexico, Best International Short Film Award at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Germany, Best Short Film award at the Sevastopol International Festival of Documentary Films and TV Programs “Won Together” in Russia, the Grand Prize at the Amiens International Film Festival in France, the award for best children’s documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and Best Short & Medium Length Documentary Award at the Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People in Greece.
